Julian Nida-Rümelin studied philosophy, physics, mathematics and political science in Munich and Tübingen. He has been teaching philosophy and political theory at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität in Munich since 2004. Prior to that, he held professorships at the Universities of Tübingen, Göttingen and Munich, as well as guest professorships at the Universities of Minneapolis, California Institute of Technology, Cagliari and St. Gallen. His research areas are the theory of rationality, ethics and political philosophy. Nida-Rümelin served as Minister of State for Culture in Schröder's first cabinet. He is a member of the B.-B. Academy of Sciences and the European Academy of Sciences and Arts, and has been a honorary professor at Humboldt University since 2001. In 2014, the University of Trieste awarded him an honorary doctorate. In 2016, he was awarded the European Medal of the Bavarian State Government. In 2019, he received the Bavarian Order of Merit from Minister President Markus Söder for "outstanding services to the Free State of Bavaria and the Bavarian people".
